AnnotationAs an initial step in developing an instrument to measure attitudes of health professionals about the age 65+ population group, this study explored with older people how they would prefer to be viewed by health professionals. 25 community-dwelling older people and 13 nursing home residents participated in focus groups on how they themselves wished to be viewed by various kinds of medical staff. The data were analysed using grounded theory. Lists of beliefs and opinions emerged, and were constructed into 17 items. By starting with a qualitative approach, the authors believe they have identified how different age groups of older people would like health professionals to view them. When fully validated, this instrument should be able to discern health professionals' positive and negative views towards their clients. (KJ/RH).
