Annotation | Productive ageing is distinguished by two distinct but compatible conceptualisations of the ageing process. First, an external, utilitarian view that emphasises concrete societal contributions made by older people to others whether they be individuals, families, groups, organisations or communities. Second, an internal affective view which emphasises the older person subscribing to personal philosophies positively affecting one's own well-being and quality of life. Both emphasise engagement by older people in the economic, social and physical environment, as well as the older person having direction, structure, purpose in life, engaged in activity, and accomplishing tasks. Older people's assets, resources, capacities and skills are underscored, rather than their problems, deficiencies and needs. A productive ageing paradigm is seen to transcend the physical or functional status of the older person, and to have direct implications for health and human service personnel assuming an expanding set of professional functions in both traditional and non-traditional community service settings.
