AnnotationCare Direct was launched as a pilot in six areas by the Department of Health (DH) in autumn 2001, as a single gateway or "one-stop shop", offering information and support to people aged 60+ and their carers, principally through a telephone help-line service. The strategic aim is to promote older people's independence, and to enable them to make informed decisions about their need for care. While the experience of the first year has been positive, with the service meeting its targets in terms of the range and volume of activity, and achieving satisfaction with callers, challenges remain. Management is being transferred to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), and Care Direct will be incorporated into a new "Third Age" service. (RH).
