Annotation | The involvement of patients, consumers and the public in judgements regarding health care provision has become a well-established principle. Given the prevalence of disease in hips and knees, orthopaedic surgery provides an important area of healthcare in which older patients should be involved with, in assessing health outcomes. The authors describe the process of developing and validating a 20-item questionnaire about patients' hip problems. They consider other areas of access to health care to which the questionnaire might be suitably applied. Patient-assessed outcome measures could be a step forward in improving healthcare in ways which are patient-centred. (RH). |
