AnnotationA descriptive study of 51 in-patients (17 men, 34 women, median age 82) from several geriatric wards in different hospitals in South Birmingham aimed to identify those who reject the use of their walking aids and instead use fixtures in the home such as furniture to help them to mobilise. 22 (43%) exclusively used their aids (e.g. Zimmer frame, sticks); 23 (45%) used a combination of aids and furniture; and 6 exclusively used furniture, even after training to use walking aids.
