Annotation | Improved longevity is the primary influence on the number of very old people in the UK today. Distant fertility rates and improved childhood survival earlier in the 20th century have had a lesser role to play. This article explores the factors that have influenced the current population age structure and those that may become more significant in the future, such as migration. The important distinction between relative and absolute numbers of older people in the population is discussed. (RH). |
