AnnotationA biographical account of the author's work as a geriatrician and consultant in Birmingham, in which he also sketches the history of geriatric medicine from the first workhouse in 1733. He deals with changes in the specialism covering three broad periods: between 1973 and 1983; between 1983 and 1990; and between 1990 and 2002. In that time, he has seen a complete transformation in the style and delivery of geriatric medicine, from long-stay care for life, to rehabilitation following acute medical care. He is strongly of the view that geriatric medicine was at its best when a comprehensive service had been developed and was available under the National Health Service (NHS). For long-stay care, we are now dependent on nursing homes, a significant proportion of which are unsuitable for those needing specialised care. (RH).
