AnnotationIn a cross-sectional epidemiological study of 1001 residents aged 65+ in the Korean city of Busan, dementia was assessed by two-stage examination with the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), psychometric measures, and the Barthel Index. The crude prevalence rate for dementia was 7.4% (men 2.4%, women 10.5%). The sex-age adjusted rate was 7% (men 2.5%, women 9%) and 8% (men 2.7%, women 10%) when adjusted with Busan and whole Korean population, respectively. These results were lower than those of other dementia studies. This is the first well-designed total-population based epidemiological study on the prevalence rate of dementia of older people living in Busan. Further studies for evaluating the relationship between type and severity of dementia are needed. (RH).
