Annotation | The psychometric properties of the Minimum Data Set Depression Rating Scale (MDSDRS) for use with older people living in nursing homes were examined. Interviews with 145 older people in three American nursing homes were conducted to complete the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) and the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). Information relevant to completing the MDSDRS was gathered from the Minimum Data Set (MDS). The MDSDRS did not perform well when validated against the HDRS and the GDS, suggesting that it may be of limited clinical value in identifying depression in older people living in nursing homes.
