Annotation | It is often argued that demand for health care in the UK is growing inexorably, so that the NHS is constantly struggling to keep up. Although patients increasingly demand more health care, they do not demand infinitely. This article considers different types of needs; how these translate into demand and supply; the selecting of priorities for health care; and principles of meeting needs. The author observes that the differences between need, demand and supply are complex, and there is little data to assist us to improve services, even if more resources were available. (RH). |
