AnnotationThe author uses research undertaken in 1996/97 and her clinical experience with people with likely early dementia who seek to convey their experiences to others. Her aims are to offer a flavour of the findings in the context of a qualitative research methodology, and to update the literature review. Her results are described under three headings and ten results categories. First, the effects of memory changes: communicating; relating; autonomy; and emotional responses. Second, making sense of memory change: keeping going; remembered identities; and "negotiating the edge of chaos" (alienation from others). Third, strategies to manage ongoing memory change: maintaining relatedness; containing emotional relationships; and balancing independence and reliance. (RH).
