Annotation | In April 2002, a new organisation within the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) took over the task of paying the state retirement pension and the minimum income guarantee (MIG) to the 11 million pensioners in Great Britain. The Pension Service has replaced the Benefits Agency. Although staffed by many of the same people, the Pension Service is a radically different organisation from its predecessors. This article analyses the challenges facing the new Pensions Service, and identifies some weaknesses, not least the introduction at the same time of new methods for paying pensions and other benefits.
