AnnotationCare Direct (also known as CARE direct) is a new service being developed by the Department of Health in partnership with some local councils, for people aged 60 years and older and their carers and relatives. Its aim is to make it easier for older people to get information and help when they need it. CAREdirect is being piloted from the end of 2001 onward, starting with 6 areas in south-west England. The Personal Social Services Research Unit (PSSRU) at the University of Kent has been evaluating the project. This interim report was conducted after the service had been running for about nine months since its launch towards the end of 2001. It was written before the announcement by ministers of the proposed absorption of Care Direct into the planning for the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) Third Age Programme. (KJ/RH).
