AnnotationThe Shaping Our Lives project (SOL) was commissioned by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) to look at issues of rights and welfare from the points of view of service users such as older people. The project was designed to focus on two areas - one rural, the other urban - and worked in partnership with the Shropshire Disability Consortium, and with a coalition of user organisations in Sheffield. The project worked at a national and local level, with SOL carrying out country-wide work through booklets. It also carried out a questionnaire on key issues with a qualitative sample of 26. The local work involved a series of local focus group meetings in Shropshire, whereas a one-day conference was held in Sheffield. The full report, "Our voice in our future: service users debate the future of the welfare state" by Michael Turner, Phil Brough and R B Williams-Findlay, is published by the JRF. (RH).
