Annotation | The Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) provides comprehensive medical and long-term care services for nursing home eligible older Americans who live in the community. 2,002 white and 859 black patients enrolled with 12 demonstration sites of PACE from 1990 to 1996 were followed from enrolment until they died. Although black patients were younger than white patients (mean age 77 vs 80) and had worse functional status on enrolment, the black patients had a lower mortality rate (in terms of survival after 1 year).
