AnnotationThis was a small-scale study exploring the views and experiences of those who work at the front line of domiciliary care. The timing of the study was significant, as the national minimum standards for domiciliary care were about to be implemented (with effect from April 2003). 26 carers (most aged 50+ and from the independent sector) took part, and issues emerging from their group discussions included: managing the pressure of time; establishing boundaries and the problems of "getting attached"; working with other agencies and how to achieve "seamless care"; and the role of training in enhancing personal skills and confidence. The study notes that further research may be appropriate to monitor completion rates for NVQs, and to explore the impact of implementation of this training standard on recruitment and retention.
