Annotation | The author's "Shades of gray: old age, American values and federal policies since 1920" (1983) presents a model developed with an interdisciplinary team of researchers affiliated to the University of Michigan's Institute of Gerontology. The author reconsiders his seven-part values preference model for old age policies in the US in the light of events in the US in the first years of the 21st century, such as a tropical storm that hit Houston and the collapse of Enron. He comments that Americans have been by turns indifferent and domineering in their dealings with friends and foes both at home and abroad, and have generally acted with an eye to short-term advantage.
