Annotation | The approach taken here to Lawton's ecological model of ageing is based on the assumption that well-being and adaptive behaviours are influenced to a greater degree by the person-environment balance or mismatch to those areas deemed more important by the individual, and that this prioritisation has a significant temporal element. Using a sample of 174 older people living in Vancouver, Canada, P-E fit is summed across three specified domains (structural resources, social support, and service support) and their sub-domains, and weighted according to each participant's appraised priority of needs for maintaining well-being. Findings indicate that the weighted model explains older people's well-being to a better degree than three major P-E fit models, including the Ecological Model of Aging. Lawton and Nahemow's original framework is revised in an effort to integrate the prioritisation of multi-level environmental domains and changes in these domains, as well as individual competence that occur across the life course. Although future research is needed to further test and refine this model, it may prove to be useful as a planning and service allocation tool targeting individuals at different points in their life course.
