Annotation | In January 1999, the Government of India announced its National Policy on Older Persons, formulated by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. Events such as the International Year of Older People (IYOP) as declared by the United Nations (UN) held out much promise and hope for older people in India; but the years since the announcement have seen limited progress in the process of following up action proposed in the Policy Statement. It has been particularly deficient in many ways pertinent to ageing women in the country; to a large extent, their interests have been undermined in the national document. The author highlights some lacunae in the policy with regard to older women, and outlines the need for action in areas overlooked. (RH). |
