AnnotationPopulation ageing will have as profound an impact on the developing world in the 21st century as it had on developed countries during the 20th century. Keynote addresses and roundtables at the seminar considered how global responses to ageing and development that targeted older populations could also contribute to the global drive to reduce poverty, enhance social stability, and improve global governance. Discussions covered a range of policies that would help the growing numbers of older, poorer populations in Africa, Asia and Latin America, and in turn lead to realisation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and related global targets in the 2002 Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing and its regional follow-up agreements.
