Dream of person-centred residential care falls victim to vested interests | Journal title | Care Plan, vol 9, no 3, March 2003 |
Pages | pp 14-17 |
Keywords | Care homes ; Nursing homes ; Registration eg homes, nursing homes ; Standards of provision. |
Annotation | The Government's climb-down over standards in residential care homes has dealt a severe blow to hopes of person-centred care in the future. This article outlines how recommendations made in the consultation document "Fit for the future?" have come to be changed in subsequent editions of "Care homes for older people: national minimum standards" (under the Care Standards Act 2000). A further consultation in July 2002 led to the private home care sector to renew and succeed in their campaign against the physical environment standards (on room sizes). Individuals from organisations representing Help the Aged, Age Concern, and Counsel and Care give their views on the way in which the standards have been undermined. (RH). |
