AnnotationUnder-treatment of depression in late life is a subject of rising public health concern throughout Europe. This study by literature review investigates and compares the availability of services for depressed older people in Denmark, France, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK. It also explores factors that might contribute to an adequate supply of such services. Only Switzerland and the UK offer nationwide community-oriented services for depressed older people. Clinical experience in treating depression in late life is not regularly acquired in the vocational training of professionals concerned. Indicators suggest that the "medical society" and health policies in Switzerland and the UK regard psychiatric disease in older people as an important subject than is the case in the other countries investigated.
