AnnotationThis book is mainly based on contributions from German and American authors at the "Ageing in the Community: Living Arrangements and Mobility" conference held in Heidelberg in April 2001, organised by the German Centre for Research on Ageing at the University of Heidelberg. The book is in five parts, the first of which discusses older people's indoor and outdoor needs within their environment. Part 2 relates to basic considerations on the ageing individual and the environment, including a paper on M Powell Lawton's vision of the role of the environment in ageing processes and outcomes. Part 3 focuses on more detailed views of "indoor" living arrangements. Part 4 deals with outdoors-related needs, with emphasis on the impact of transport systems on mobility, mostly relating to the older driver. Other contributions in this section deal with macrointerventions such as traffic calming, and microinterventions such as assistive devices, telematics and person-environment interactions. Part 5 highlights future perspectives of ageing independently, combining perspectives of ageing inside and outside the home. (RH).
