AnnotationThe purpose of this report is to set out the results of an 'intelligent mapping' exercise of voluntary and community sector organisations currently delivering elderly care services in Birmingham. The exercise identified over 295 voluntary and community organisations that provide a wide range of services. The regional Health Authority, who commissioned this research project, were particularly interested in the potential contribution of the voluntary sector in maintaining older people in their own homes for as long as possible. The research points to a number of characteristics of current provision that could be improved and these are listed. Finally, a recommendation is made that a voluntary sector 'intermediary hub' is established to provide an interface between the voluntary sector delivering services and the Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) and Social Services. This would enable a single point of contact for PCTs and Social Services and so better coordinate and maximise the provision available. (KJ/RH).
