AnnotationThe effectiveness of a 5-item version of the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) was tested for screening 60 in-patients in a geriatric acute care ward, 70 nursing home residents, and 51 older people living in the community attending a geriatric outpatient clinic. All participants had a comprehensive geriatric assessment. The 5-item GDS was compared with the 15-item version of the GDS using the clinical diagnosis according to DSM-IV criteria. In the whole sample, 48.1% of the subjects were depressed. The 5-item GDS was found to be as effective as the 15-item GDS for screening depression in cognitively intact older subjects. (RH).
