AnnotationThe prognosis of older patients admitted to hospital in medical intensive care units depends not only on what acute physiological impairments they may have, but also on a series of pre-existing conditions, such as loss of functional independence, severe and moderate cognitive impairment and low body mass index (BMI). The authors report results of a prospective study of 659 patients aged 65+ admitted to a hospital in Turin over a 10-month period from August 2000 to May 2001, of whom 91 died (14.71%). (RH).
