AnnotationThis is part of a series of guides on intimate caring skills, which focus on aspects of personal care that are part of the daily tasks of care staff. It considers three strands, namely fluids, food and skin care, also problems such as skin damage from incontinence and burns. Dementia disrupts signals to the brain, such that important information and instructions may be misinterpreted or not understood. When these disrupted signals affect food and fluids, the skin will suffer along with the rest of the body. The purpose of this and other items in the series is to encourage a response to people with dementia which recognises their individuality, treats them with respect and dignity, and enhances their feeling of self-worth.
