AnnotationResearch indicates that people with Down's Syndrome are most likely to show clinical signs of Alzheimer's disease (AD) over the age of 50, though it can be found in younger people. This pack is designed to be used by family carers, staff and other professionals. It seeks to help them to care more effectively for people with Down's Syndrome and dementia, by focusing on practical day-to-day issues. These include how to: maintain skills; treat treatable conditions; understand and respond appropriately to changes in behaviour and function; provide emotional reassurance for carers; improve the confidence of carers to look after individuals; identify local supports and resources; and be open to the problems as they arise, and help with tips and solutions to cope. The pack is arranged in 6 sections: contextual issues; service issues; common themes; daily living skills; health issues; and late stage. While not designed as a staff training resource, the pack may be useful in that context. (RH).
