Annotation | Hospital admission of many older patients is associated with deterioration in nutritional status. In this prospective, randomised, controlled study of 80 patients aged 75+ in Liege, Belgium, the Mass Nutritional Assessment (MNA) scale was used to select older patients who were at risk of undernutrition. Oral supplements were well accepted and tolerated by the intervention group; their weight remained stable both on discharge from hospital and in the convalescent period. Significant weight loss was observed in the control group on day 60. Thus, use of daily oral supplementation during and after being in hospital maintains a patient's body weight. (RH). |
