Annotation205 residents placed in nursing and residential homes in the Nottingham Health Authority area over a 3-month period formed the sample for this interview study regarding their dependency and health status on admission. A substantial number of higher dependency residents were in residential homes, while many admissions to nursing homes had low dependency needs. Case-mix of residents in nursing and residential homes is likely to reflect the placement criteria used and changes in health status following placement. Although pre-placement measures of disability and dependency were supported by follow-up assessments, it is essential that the needs of residents in long-term care are adequately monitored and managed, in particular those in residential care with higher dependency needs.
