Annotation | Creating a feeling of empowerment in front-line care staff members may assist them in better coping and achievement, and in better quality of care of residents in their charge who have Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other dementias. This qualitative study aimed to identify training needs, and to create a training manual which would empower these workers to conduct their care duties more confidently, effectively and sensitively. Participants were 24 female staff aged 18-69 from 3 US states, with 6 months to 10 years work experience in this job. All reported that they had not received sufficient training in caring for residents with dementia. Four themes emerged from responses to a needs-analysis questionnaire as the bases for developing a "Dementia-related Care Training" manual. The themes were: experiencing the meaning of AD or other forms of dementia; acknowledging residents' changing care needs over time; realising the importance of individualised care for residents; and empowering front-line care staff members in the care process. Post-training feedback from 18 of the participants regarding the manual's effectiveness and usefulness, suggests that continued use of the manual would also increase job satisfaction and commitment, and would reduce job stress through better on-the-job coping skills learned.
