AnnotationGerontology, geriatrics and ageing studies academic programmes (GGA) in the California State University (CSU) were surveyed to assess CSU adequacy in meeting the knowledge needs of the state with the largest present and projected older population. GGA increased by 16% between 1988 and 1997, but the number of campuses offering courses decreased from 100% to 78%. Although non-degree and undergraduate programmes predominated, growth was greater in degree and graduate programmes. The CSU trend parallels US national patterns at a lower magnitude, despite higher state than national ageing population projections. Environmental and organisational predictors of GGA growth were examined in an innovation diffusion model using multiple regressions and bivariate correlations. County financial and demographic ageing variables were strong predictors of campus size and presence of a gerontology centre, but only moderately correlated with GGA. Old age demography was not related consistently to GGA in the present population or in US national samples, calling for further analysis of higher education institutions and the political economy within which the demographic imperative may be expressed in GGA programme development.
