Annotation | The concept of service-learning was first introduced in the US in the late 1960s, to reflect curricula that meet both human needs and students' educational development through community service. This article presents a case study on the implementation of a core service-learning requirement into an honours undergraduate gerontology seminar for new students. Students are placed in a variety of community agencies that serve older people, and are required to serve for a minimum of four hours per week in addition to their traditional academic studies. The process for integrating the course's service and non-service components is discussed, as are the informal evaluations from students. (KJ/RH). |
