Annotation | The interrelationships between formal and informal unpaid services is examined. The Sydney Older Persons' Study conducted interviews with 537 older people living in the community (aged 75+) regarding their use of community and medical services and the provision of unpaid support. Disease and disability were assessed by medical practitioners. Unpaid network support for instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) needs was used when community services were not. Unpaid ADL and IADL network support is used in conjunction with medical services. Higher socioeconomic status, female gender and having fewer co-residents predicted higher use of community services. The study's male participants spent more days in hospital. (RH) |
