AnnotationOlder people who experience diagnosable forms of mental illness are less likely to be identified and treated than other population groups. In the US, the Administration on Aging (AOA) has called upon the ageing network to respond regarding how exactly it serves older people with mental illnesses, and its directions for future activity. In this research, the authors surveyed 48 experts from the State Units on Aging, and gathered information about programmes that target older people with mental illnesses. They found that activities within the ageing network have increased significantly over the last 20 years, with 28 states administering at least one programme for older people with mental illnesses. Most programmes were targeted exclusively towards those with dementia, but administrative and financial support was minimal. If the ageing network is going to play a role in serving the growing population of older people with mental illnesses, then a greater range of programmes must be developed. The AOA can take a lead by increasing administrative and financial support beyond current levels. (RH).
