Annotation385 people aged 18 to 97 in a rural area of a midwestern US state responded to a postal survey regarding the effect of age and their past use of services, or knowledge of counselling services and access barriers to these services. The researchers devised scales measuring knowledge and access. Age and past use each had a significant effect on knowledge of counselling. Age was significant with transport, taking time off, and knowing whom to call on the access barriers scale. Implications for counsellors include seeking out alternative outreach programmes to serve older people's needs, and future research on barriers to older people's use of counselling services. (RH).
