Annotation125 Chinese, 57 white, 53 Hispanic and 23 black residents aged 60+ newly admitted to a New York City municipal nursing home from November 1992 to May 1997 were the subjects of this, the first systematic report of the sociodemographic characteristics (SDCs) and health status of such a group in the US using the Minimum Data Set database (MDS). Most of these Chinese were first-generation immigrants, and spoke primarily Mandarin or Cantonese. Nearly three-quarters of them had cognitive impairment; and they were under-diagnosed in dementia on admission. Severe dependence in activity of daily living (ADL) was identified in more than a third of the group. Fewer of them were using psychotropic medication on admission than the whites. Similar to other groups, many of the Chinese subjects were incontinent, and had chewing or swallowing problems, hypertension, anaemia, and stroke. These findings suggest that Chinese nursing home residents are as frail as other racial or ethnic groups on admission to nursing homes. There is a need for nursing home staff who can speak Cantonese and Mandarin Chinese. (RH).
