Annotation | A shortage of younger workers is expected in the future, and consequently older people will be needed to remain in employment beyond current pension ages. This demographic shift demands consideration of issues relating to older people in the workplace, and the likely impact of continued employment on quality of life. This research project for the Growing Older Programme concerned labour force participation of a sample of 1,168 people (age range 50-75, men 49%, mean age 61). The focus was specifically on the relationship between paid work and life satisfaction, and the possible determinants of labour force participation at older ages. Two types of findings are outlined with regard to "quality of life" according to age group and employment status. Whereas subjective well-being may be viewed in terms of positive and negative affects (pleasant or unpleasant emotions) in the short term, life satisfaction is based on cognitive (mental) self-appraisals over longer time periods. This is significant, as many previous studies have failed to examine more than one single component of "overall subjective well-being". (RH). |
