AnnotationAlthough the promotion of lifelong learning is a cornerstone of the present government's education policy, older people seem to have been largely excluded, because they are not seen as primarily concerned with earning a living. This research for the Growing Older Programme set out to explore older people's experiences of learning and education over the course of their lives, the factors that might affect whether they choose to learn in retirement, and what role learning plays in their lives as they grow older. An important aspect of this study was to develop research strategies drawing on a variety of investigative techniques. In particular, the authors explored the use of older people themselves as interviewers, in order to maximise the involvement of those being studied. (RH).
