AnnotationIn March 2001 the Government published Skills for Life (the national strategy for improving adult literacy and numeracy skills). One of the key commitments set out in this strategy has been to raise achievement by improving the status and quality of training available, and raising the level of qualifications, for all teachers of adult literacy and numeracy. A key strand of this work has been undertaken by the Further Education National Training Organisation (FENTO). FENTO has developed this suite of subject specifications for teachers of adult literacy and numeracy. They have been designed to ensure that from September 2002, all new teachers of adult literacy and numeracy are equipped with the appropriate and relevant knowledge, understanding and personal skills in their subject area.
