Reaching behind the bars
 — [older people in prison]
Author(s)Alan Parrish
Journal titleNursing Older People, vol 15, no 3, May 2003
Pagespp 10-13
KeywordsPrisoners ; Health services ; Needs [elderly].
AnnotationThe number of males prisoners aged 60+ in Britain's 137 jails rose from 345 in 1989 to 1,053 in 1999, and the number of older women prisoners rose from 9 to 20 in the same period. The author has been talking to older people in prison, and says that it is time to remove the obstacles that prevent older prisoners from receiving appropriate health care while in prison. Future provision should be developed along the lines of that at HMP Kingston near Portsmouth, where a dedicated wing provides accommodation and 24-hour care for up to 30 prisoners. (RH).
