Annotation | People with dementia, as with other older people, are being admitted in increasing numbers to acute wards, and they tend not to fare well in these environments. The underlying values of this practice guide are that people with dementia are individuals in their own right, and should be treated as we ourselves like to be treated. Care needs to be organised around the needs of the individual - that is, using a person-centred approach to care. By providing information about dementia, this practice guide offers intervention ideas to help clinical support workers to learn more about dementia, and thereby improve the care and well-being of those with dementia. It discusses issues and ways of helping people with dementia with regard to food and fluids, pain, the environment, and bathing. It also describes ways in which family carers can be involved in the care of the person with dementia. (RH). |
