New intimate relationships in later life | Author(s) | Kate Davidson, Graham Fennell |
Journal title | Ageing International, vol 27, no 4, Fall 2002 |
Pages | pp 3-10 |
Keywords | Emotions ; Sexual activity ; Personal relationships ; Friendship ; Literature reviews. |
Annotation | The editors of this issue of Ageing International introduce the other six articles, which explore whether or how widowed and divorced older people seek new relationships. They find that the authors reveal gender, culture, family expectations, social mores and self-agency as contributing to choices and constraints in establishing new partnerships. Should new relationships involve remarriage, cohabitation or non co-residential intimacy (Living Apart Together - LAT)? The papers reveal a complex picture of relationships and friendships which transcend an older person's wishes as to whether to establish another intimate relationship after the loss of a partner.
