AnnotationShort-term (3months) and long-term (1 year) cost implications of adult day care are analysed. A variety of costs (e.g. adult services, formal service use, informal sources of care, employment charges) were estimated for caregivers (367 for 3 months, 201 for 1 year). The daily costs to reduce caregivers' role overload and depression decreased with adult care usage over a 1-year period. The findings emphasise that adult day programmes are most effective for dementia caregivers who use these services consistently and for longer periods of time. Practitioners must develop methods to encourage early take-up of day services to be of benefit to caregivers. (RH).
