Annotation | Kirklees (main centres Huddersfield, Dewsbury and Batley) is a metropolitan council in West Yorkshire with urban and rural areas. The purpose of the Joint Review is to provide an objective assessment of how well local people are being served by their social services, and to make a constructive contribution towards the further improvement of the service provided. It finds that Kirklees has many effective social services and serves most people well. The survey of users and carers reported high satisfaction with services, but with comments on difficulties in getting information and inconsistent practice on carers' assessments. Examples of good practice include: matching people with disabilities to housing that already has adaptations; the Carers Gateway, providing advice and support, resulting from the King's Fund Carers' Impact Initiative; the Safra Centre in Dewsbury providing services to ethnic minorities; and use of performance indicators to support service improvements. Priorities for action include more responsive and consistent consultation arrangements with service users, carers, service providers and local communities; highlighting practice quality; and promoting outcomes to users.
