Annotation | Dutch nursing homes employ doctors who have completed a 2-year specialist training programme to become qualified nursing home physicians. This paper reviews the history and origins of the profession of nursing home medicine in the context of Dutch nursing homes. It examines the competencies required and the training available, and the benefits of this arrangement in improving quality of care. The nursing home specialist physician's relevant skills and competencies are discussed, and his roles, tasks, and the methods of working in providing care are explained. The specialist training required for such a role is considered to be highly desirable, such that the benefits of the role outweigh the disadvantages. (RH). |
