Annotation | The disproportionately high burden of mortality and morbidity in older African Americans is due, in part, to a lack of understanding of those factors contributing to such outcomes. This article is a process evaluation describing the successes and challenges associated with recruiting older African Americans to the Durham Elders Project, a general health survey of that older ethnic group in Durham, North Carolina. It considers an effort to nurture collaboration between university and community institutions to both facilitate research endeavours and to offer meaningful and culturally appropriate contributions to the community. The primary challenges discovered include the effective coordination of a community research advisory board, ensuring participant autonomy, and reducing concerns of exploitation among potential participants.
