AnnotationThe US National Institute on Aging (NIA)/ National Institutes of Health established the Edward R Roybal Centers for Applied Gerontology in 1993, to accelerate the basic application of basic research into practice in gerontology. This special issue of the Gerontologist reflects the Roybal Centers' goal of improving the process of translating theory and basic research from the behavioural and social sciences into practical outcomes beneficial to older people's lives. Articles cover the following topics: caregiver stress; driving ability; the fit between older people and technology, exercise and well-being; and social integration and later life. Two further papers concern knowledge dissemination and utilisation in gerontology; and theoretical models of cognitive ageing and implications for translational research in medicine. (RH).
