Annotation1,540 community-dwelling people aged 65+ in the Madrid suburb of Leganés were selected for a longitudinal study; 1,284 (83%) responded to the first interview. Cognitive function orientation and memory in 1997 and cognitive decline (absent, mild or severe) over 4 years (1993-1997) were assessed using an instrument previously validated for populations with a low level of education. Poor social connection, infrequent participation in social activities, and social disengagement were found to predict the risk of cognitive decline in older individuals. The probability of cognitive decline was lower for both men and women with a high frequency of visual contact with relatives and community social integration. Engagement with friends seemed to be protective for cognitive decline in women but not in men. (RH).
