Annotation | The living arrangements of older Mexican immigrants were examined, to demonstrate how the formation of complex households is related to English language proficiency, and the extent to which that in turn is related maintaining residential independence. Data from the 1990 US Census of Population were used to evaluate multi-level multinomial logistic regression models of older Mexican immigrants' living arrangements. Strong English language skills were found to increase the likelihood of living independently and increasing the likelihood of being the head of the household. Living in an area with a relatively high proportion of Hispanic people was also found to increase the likelihood that older Mexican immigrants will live independently, as compared to with living with others and not being a head of household.
